Barnum (1995-2009) and my daughter, 2001

I'm a dog lover and always have been. Growing up, we always had dogs and when my hubs and I were first married, one of our first major decisions together was to get not one, but two German Shorthaired Pointers.

Did I mention we lived in a tiny 600+ square foot apartment then? During one of the coldest and snowiest winters on record in Newport, RI? ;-)

Our dogs, Barnum and Bailey, were worth the effort; Knute was in the Navy back then and when he was gone (which was often), I had the dogs to keep me busy, to keep me safe, to just keep me company and be my friends. And they were some of the best dogs I've ever had.

Bailey passed away in 2007 and at the end of September this year, we said goodbye to our beloved German Shorthaired Pointer, Barnum. We have a new GSP here, Brownie, who we adopted through GSP Rescue of Ohio in 2007 and he has been a wonderful addition to our family.

But I have to be honest - owning a dog isn't the most frugal choice. If I ran the numbers on what I've spent on all my dogs over the years - the food, the vet bills, the chewed up pairs of shoes (!) - I'm sure my head would be swimming.

Some of the most expensive bills are the emergency vet visits, something we've done a few times more than I wish because the fees are so steep. Our most recent one at the end of Barnum's life was a little over $400 - ouch.

So when Kroger contacted me and asked if I would talk about their Pet Insurance Policies (part of the Kroger Personal Finance family), I was happy to do so; I've seriously considered buying an accident-only policy for our 2 year old GSP, Brownie.

Kroger Personal Finance offers several different levels of coverage for your pet(s), from a basic accident-only for $9.95 a month for one pet up to a Preferred Plan which covers accidents, illnesses and routine care for $39.95/month. The full breakdown of rates and coverages can be found here.

Even if you don't have a Kroger in your area, this insurance is available online and through most of the stores within the Kroger family of stores (ie: King Soopers, Ralph's, Fred Meyer, etc).

Purchasing pet insurance not only gives you peace of mind that you'll be able to handle unexpected emergency bills (rather than have to consider the alternatives), it can help you manage and reduce the costs of the routine care that our pets need each year.

Onto the giveaway!

I've been graciously given a $25 Gift Card to Kroger or to one of the Kroger family of stores in your region. You can see all the stores under the Kroger umbrella right here.
