January is the time for resolutions and one of the most popular is losing weight; I've got a few holiday pounds I'm working on shedding myself! Without the help of a calorie counter app on your phone or a calorie book, it can be tricky to find healthy options on restaurant menus.

The Fit from the Farm menu covers all three square meals - breakfast, lunch, and dinner. All items have a detailed nutritional breakdown right there on the menu including calorie counts, fat grams, and protein grams, making it easy for you to stay on track if you're watching what you eat.

Bob Evans was gracious enough to send me a $20 gift card so my family and I could take a trip to my kiddo's fave restaurant (really, they squealed when I announced our destination) and try the Fit from the Farm menu ourselves. My hubs had the Chicken, Spinach and Tomato Pasta (526 calories) and I tried the Potato Crusted Flounder dinner with baked potato and steamed broccoli (415 calories). Both were excellent and I have to admit that I really like the smaller sized portions; it's so easy to over eat at a restaurant when the dinners are seved on plates the size of platters.

My kiddos had fun, too, ordering their fave breakfasts. My little guy, though, was wiped out from his big birthday weekend. He chowed down on his pancakes and then drifted off to la-la land.

    My best tip is to know what restaurant I'm going to, and then look on their website for nutritional content beforehand, so I know what I'm going to eat.

    My best tip for calorie counting is to be meticulous about writing things down. That way you'll know by the end of the day if you can afford to have a dessert after dinner or if you need to cut back the following day.

    Look for grilled or "low cal" options on the menu, do not eat any bread that may be complimentary and do not buy an appetizer. The entrees are usually huge anyway. Also, skip the dessert, too expensive and way too high in calories.

    I am actually really bad when I eat out and rarely look at calories I see eating out as a "day off". But I love when places like Bob evans has on thier menus the breakdown to remind me hey you should probally get this instead of that!!

    I've never counted calories (seemed like too much work) but what always helps me when I go out to eat is to cut my meal in half as soon as I get it and take the second half home. That way I've cut my calories in half and have another yummy meal for me the next day.
