*HOT*! | Meijer Mega Event: Buy (7) Participating Products, get $7 Off at Checkout!

This week, Meijer is running a Mega Event: buy 7 participating items, get $7 off instantly at checkout (limit 1 per transaction).

I don't often make the trek to Meijer (since I loathe the traffic at the Fields Ertel exit off of I-71) but this deal  - coupled with the chance to grab the Starkist Tuna catalina deal as well as stock up on some Kellogg's cereal to use for the $10 Kellogg's Cereal rebate - made it worth my time to make the trip.

I also had several tear pad coupons that a dear friend of  mine (who I introduced to couponing about 3 months ago; she's become so good at it and such a deal hunter that I affectionately refer to her as a "Coupon Zealot") found in-store at Meijer - you may want to check to see if you can find these or if you have them in your coupon stash.

FYI, I was hoping to score the Buy 3 particpating Kellogg's Cereals, get $3.50 Catalina toward 1 Gallon of Milk deal but that didn't print for me.  You may have better luck than I did.  ;-)

Let's Go Krogering! | Week of March 28, 2011 {Kroger Crazy 8 Sale...meh!}

Wondering what's the deal with my weekly Let's Go Krogering! (LGK!) posts?

This week, Kroger is running a Crazy 8 Sale Event - the prices of the items featured in this week's sale ad all end in an 8. While at first glance the sale prices seem decent, a closer look (and a little comparing of this week's ad with previous ads) shows that the prices are just...meh.

For instance, last week Kroger had DiGiorno pizzas on sale for $4.77 ea. This week, they're part of the Crazy 8 sale for $5.48, a difference of $0.71 (in Kroger's favor).

While I don't keep a price book, I do keep track of notable sale prices in my weekly savings google spreadsheet (courtesy of Savings Lifestyle) as well as the prices of items I buy most frequently (milk, bread, cheese, cereal, frozen veggies, pasta, meats, etc). I also just have a good memory for numbers and I do usually save a few weeks worth of Kroger ads as well.

Using all of these sources help me to spot trends in pricing (either up or down) and identify what is really a "good" deal - even with coupons.

The fine print:

The coupon is redeemable at these Greater Cincinnati area locations:

I regularly shop the Aldi in my community because they offer great deals on basic produce and pantry staples.  Since I tend to just grab the best weekly sale and coupon deals at Kroger, shopping at Aldi allows me to get the remaining items I'll need for the week without busting my budget. For example, this week I was able to get $1.00/lb fresh Dole strawberries and $0.49 cantaloupe.  AWESOME!

If you're in the greater Cincy area, be sure to look for this wonderful coupon in your mailbox this week - I hope you'll luck out and get one, too!

Coffee & Clicks | March 26, 2011 {Edition #11 - Gardening Ideas}

Welcome to Coffee & Clicks, my weekly roundup of posts from my Google Reader that caught my eye, that made me think, and that just made me laugh.

Using Google Reader saves me oodles of time; with a few clicks, I can hop through all my fave blogs to get the critical coupon & deal info I use to save big $$.  But whenever I find myself with a few minutes to spare in the kitchen (which is where my laptop sits on the counter), I also like to scroll through and read for pleasure.

Coffee & Clicks is my way of sharing those interesting posts with you.  If you find yourself with a few minutes of leisure to surf on the weekends while you sip your coffee (or whatever fills your mug), feel free to wander through this list of posts and spend some time reading, reflecting, and relaxing.

++++++++++++++++

My 5 year old's bean plants on our kitchen windowsill.

We had a stretch of very warm weather here in my part of SW Ohio - temperatures were in the 70s for a few days and I was able to jumpstart some of my spring gardening plans (I added a foundation bed of shrubs on the back corner of my house). I had plans to work on moving my vegetable square foot garden to a sunnier spot this week but Wednesday brought thunderstorms and hail (!!) and then Thursday brought back the chilly weather - we were back in the high 30s. We might see a couple of inches of snow tonight....ahhhh, it's springtime in Ohio!

Since I've got gardening on my brain, I thought I'd roundup a few useful posts for those of you who are thinking of trying vegetable gardening this year.

:: My Square Foot Garden has a great list of Easiest Vegetables to Grow in case you find yourself overwhelmed by the choices in the seed aisle at your local lawn and garden center. There are lots of great articles and pictures of her square foot gardens as well; be sure to click around if you're wondering how to get started. Great site!

:: If you're in an apartment and have a balcony where you can container garden, make sure to check out ALL the great gardening ideas at Life on the Balcony. I love this Stylish DIY Container for the Balcony Gardener on a Budget - such a pretty way to add flair to boring terra pots. I think I might draft my kiddos to help me paint some of our containers!

:: I love all things frugal so this list of Seed Sources for Frugal Gardeners at In the Garden Online is one I'll be checking out myself. I especially like the links to the seed exchanges; I have oodles of seed packets in my garage and I'd love to trade what I don't need for what I do.

:: For those of you who don't have the space to garden, did you know you might be able to use space in a community garden near you for free or for a small fee? Be sure to check out the Community Garden Locator at Local Harvest for community gardens in your town.

:: And just for fun, check out Backyard Chickens post for beginners, Raising Chickens 101. I can't have chickens in my backyard (our neighborhood has a pretty detailed home owner's association plus our GSP Brownie would think he'd won the bird dog lottery) but I would love to one day if we have the chance to buy a little bit of land. Mmmm....fresh eggs! ;-)

Enjoy your weekend!

Kroger Catalina Deal | UPDATE: Starkist Tuna Pouches: Buy 5, get $1.50 OYNO (exp 04/17/11)

Good news! I had the incorrect date for the expiration of the current Starkist catalina deal at Kroger (buy 5, get $1.50 OYNO).  When I was instore yesterday, I checked the shelf tag and the correct expiration date is April 17, 2011.

The current price on the Starkist pouches at my Kroger is $1.59.  Here's what the deal looks like right now:

Buy (10) Starkist Pouches at $1.59 ea ($15.90)
Use (5) $0.75/2, RP 03/06
Final price: $10.90
Earn $3.00 OYNO - (2) $1.50 catalinas
Final price after catalinas: $7.90 or $0.79 ea

Now, as I mentioned here, this price is certainly not a *stellar* deal, especially with the Bumblebee pouches priced at $0.49 during the current March to Savings Mega Event sale.

My advice: hold those Starkist coupons and wait to see if the pouches go on sale during the remaining three weeks or so of the catalina

If we see a 10/$10 sale with these included then it will be time to buy!

Printable Coupon | $1.00/1 Graeter's Ice Cream Pint

Be still my Black Raspberry Chip loving heart!

There's a  $1.00/1 Graeter's Ice Cream Pint available on Coupons.com - to get it to display, enter zip code 76109 or 31145.

Kroger March to Savings Mega Event | Stockpiling with Multiple Trips

I grabbed many, many great deals at Kroger on Monday during my weekly Let's Go Krogering! trip; however, a few of the items that were on my list were temporarily out of stock.

Since I had ordered extra coupons for this sale, I didn't mind having to go back to Kroger again this week; in fact, I planned on making at least two - if not three - trips to Kroger this week.

Why?

:: It's bad coupon karma to wipe shelves. Just because I have the coupons to get 20 boxes of FREE Ronzoni Pasta doesn't mean I should get them all.at.once. Making multiple trips allows me to spread those coupons over multiple days/transactions without clearing the shelves.

A work-around for busy folks: If you're crunched for time and you can only make (1) big stockpiling trip during a Mega Event Sale and you do want to purchase a large quantity of a certain item with coupons, call ahead and talk to the manager and ask if they would please put aside/special order the amount you'll be purchasing. You'll save time and money and won't leave the store shelves bare (and fellow deal-seekers grumbling in your wake).

:: Hot deals disappear quickly and need re-stocking. During a Mega Event Sale, there are always a handful of truly awesome deals - items that are FREE or nearly free with coupons. Even if other couponers aren't wiping the shelves, timing is everything - you may get to Kroger and find that an item you're looking for is just plain gone. If you can find a helpful employee (and all the employees at my Kroger have always been extremely helpful), they might be willing to look in the stockroom for you. Otherwise, you'll need to simply try, try again another day to find those hot deals.

:: New printable coupons and Sunday insert coupons mean possible new deals. In the Cincinnati region, our Kroger sale ad runs Monday through Sunday. When there's a Mega Event sale, I always plan to make one last trip to Kroger on Sunday afternoon or evening to stock up with any remaining coupons I might have as well as with any new coupons that matchup to the Mega Event deals from the Sunday paper inserts.

Kroger Mega Events are one of my favorite ways to stockpile for pennies on the dollar; when I can shop my stockpile for the coming months rather than shop the stores, I can save myself a bundle of money.

Kroger Catalina Deal | Starkist Tuna Pouches: Buy 5, get $1.50 OYNO

I headed out to Kroger after Mass this morning to pick up a few bagels and to grab the Starkist Tuna catalina deal before it expired today.  I lucked into some 100% whole wheat bread marked down to $0.59 for quick sale, too - woot!

I wanted to share the Starkist deal with you in case you've got a quick Kroger run planned for the end of your Sunday.

Buy (5) Starkist Tuna pouches, get $1.50 OYNO (catalina ends 3/20/11)

Starkist Tuna Pouch, $1.59 ea
$1.50/3, RP 03/06
$0.75/2, RP 03/06
Final price: $1.09 ea
Net cost after catalina: $0.79 ea

I used (2) of each of the above coupons and bought (10) in one transaction.  Both of the $1.50 catalinas printed with no problem.

This deal isn't a HUGE deal - honestly, you can get the Bumblebee Tuna Pouches for $0.49 each through 3/27 with the March to Savings Mega Event which is a better deal.

For my family, these tuna pouches are a stockpile item since my hubs usually packs a couple with his lunch every day.  Even though it wasn't a *stellar* deal, it was still a good enough deal for me since my stockpile needed replenishing.  I thought I'd share it because it might be a good enough deal for one of you fine frugalistas out there, too.

Have a great Sunday!

HOT DEAL | FREE Lays Chips at Kroger on April 1, 2011: 3pm-8pm ONLY

Mark your calendars for Friday, April 1, 3-8pm and plan to head to Kroger for a FREE bag of Frito-Lay Chips.

These aren't full sized bags - the ad in today's (3/20) Smart Source insert states that the bags are 2.5-3oz.  Good while supplies last; one free bag per customer.

Enjoy!

With Spring Break coming up for many families as well as thoughts of summer, there were several really good posts this week about vacation planning.  Here's a few:

:: Stockpiling Moms asks Are You Planning a Disney Vacation?  They have several good posts linked in that post where they share ways to save if you're making the trek to Disney this year.

:: Savings Lifestyle shares How to Save on a Disney World Vacation this week as well.  More great ideas and practical tips on how to cut your overall vacation cost while having the full Disney experience.

:: Frugal Dad has a great post with Ideas to Trim (or Slash) Vacation Costs.  If you're not a Disney kind of vacationer, there are some great tips about having fun without doing Disney.

:: Frugal Hacks has some good ideas for Frugal Eats on Road Trips.  You can definitely save some big money on food costs by planning ahead for your road trip as well as for your destination.

Enjoy your weekend!
