Happy Memorial Day! | Support the USO by Helping Kroger Donate $1 Million

Image courtesy of Kroger

Today is Memorial Day, the unofficial start of summer.

Many of us spend today with friends and family enjoying barbecues, a dip in the pool, or a long weekend away.

Memorial Day is more than a reason for a big holiday weekend. Memorial Day is truly for honoring our military service members, honoring not just those who have given all but those who continue to answer the call to serve our nation, to protect and defend, to sacrifice the comforts of home and family when they are serving abroad.

As a once-upon-a-time Navy wife (my hubs was active duty 1995-2000), I have seen first hand how hard our military members work and how difficult the separations are on their spouses and children.

Although life as a Navy wife was challenging, most of my memories of Navy life center on the deep-seated pride and honor that drives our our military service members. No one goes into the military to get rich; those that enter the service and continue to serve past their initial obligations truly believe in their mission of upholding and defending America.

If you'd like to do something today to honor your local service men and women, Kroger has a great opportunity to help you donate to the USO this year. As the USO prepares to celebrate their 70th anniversary in 2011, Kroger has partnered with them and set a goal of $1 Million in donations from Kroger, Kroger-banner stores, and their customers.

If you're interested in donating (any amount is ok and your donation is fully tax-deductible) follow this link to learn more. You can also read about ways to get involved with hands-on volunteering opportunities with your local USO right here.

Enjoy your weekend and be sure to thank any of your friends and family who have served!

*Disclosure: Although I have worked with Kroger in the past on different campaigns, this post was not solicited by Kroger nor am I being compensated in any manner for it. I simply wanted to share this chance to give back to the USO with you.

CLIP | Sunday Coupon Preview 5/29/11 {NO Inserts}

It's that time of the week - time to look ahead at the anticipated Sunday insert coupons so you can start planning for next week's store deals.

It's always useful to know how many coupon inserts to expect each Sunday and even more useful to know which coupons you'll find in those inserts so you can decide as early as possible if it's a good week to order coupons from a clipping service.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This Sunday, 05/29/11, there will be (0) inserts in the Sunday newspapers.

With Memorial Day weekend coming up, there will be no inserts; this is common over big holiday weekends.

Be sure to check the Insert Schedule for 2011 to look ahead at the upcoming weekends if you haven't already; make a note on your calendar which weekends extra inserts are expected so you can plan ahead to grab extra papers.

With no coupon inserts in this Sunday's paper, you can spend some time getting your coupon organization system cleaned out and ready for deals.  Check out these posts for some ideas on how to get started:

:: Back to Basics | Couponing, Part 1: Collecting

:: 8 Tips to Organize Your Coupons Each Month

Also, be sure to check out some of the HOT printable coupons that were released this week as well; if you'll use them, print 'em before they're gone.

Have a great weekend!

CLIP | *HOT* Printable Coupons {Boulder Canyon Chips, Scotts Naturals, Seattle's Best & More!}

There were some *HOT* printable coupons released this week!  Time to fire up your printers and get them before they're gone!

Remember, you can print (2) unique coupons per IP so be sure to print (2) per each coupon you want.

Since this week marked the beginning of a new month, there were lots of fresh coupons released at the printable sites. Since hot coupons tend to hit their print/campaign limit quickly at the start of the month, it's a good idea to print any hot/high value coupons you think you might use and print them sooner rather than later.

Here are some of the best ones I see as of 5/26/11, 10:09 pm EST:

:: $1.00/1 Boulder Canyon Potato Chips (use zipcode 90210 - I *love* seeing this coupon come back!)

:: $1.00/1 (4) or more rolls of Scotts Naturals bath tissue

:: $1.00/1 V8 46 oz V-Fusion + Tea Beverage

:: $3.00/2 Playtex Gentle Glide Tampons 18 ct+

:: $1.50/1 Seattle's Best Ice Latte 4 pk

:: $1.00/1 Any Marie's Dressing, Dip, or Glaze

:: $1.50/2 Breyer's Ice Cream Blasts {Facebook Offer}

:: $2.00/1 Zyrtec Indoor & Outdoor Allergy

Enjoy your weekend!

Let's Go Krogering! | Week of May 23, 2011 {Frozen Food Mega Sale Continues...Without Me!}

Wondering what's the deal with my weekly Let's Go Krogering! (LGK!) posts?
 Click here for more information.

This week Kroger is running a Frozen Foods Mega Event - buy 10 participating items, get an instant $5.00 off at checkout.

While I *love* a good Kroger Mega Sale, this particular version - with it's emphasis on frozen and prepared foods - just doesn't ring my bell.  The only items I usually grab from the freezer aisles are ice cream and popsicles.  {FYI: Kroger Deluxe Ice Cream is on sale for $2.50 this week!}  ;-)

There are some nice deals at Kroger this week on non-Mega items, particularly on Pepperidge Farm cookies which don't often go on sale nor do they often have coupons out for these.  To have both a sale and coupon for these is NICE!

My final total is a bit higher than it should have been - I had a few coupons for the Kool Aid (I bought 51 packets - a summer's worth of drinks, slushies, and popsicles!) and the cashier (who was wonderful) missed ringing a couple of them up correctly.  I also had a price error on my receipt for the NY Bagel Chips.

Could I have gone to the customer service desk?  Sure; I've done so many times in the past.  But I was short on time yesterday; I decided my time was worth more than the $2-$3 that I would have netted in savings.  I've said it so many times here before but it bears repeating: your time is your most valuable resource.  Use it wisely!

My Kroger Trip, Monday, May 23, 2011:

Spent: $57.15
Saved: $64.79 (53% )

Coupons Used:

Iams Dog Food, 8 lbs, $11.99

Tide Stain Release Event | Thank You for the Amazing Afternoon at Great American Ballpark!

Yesterday, my family and I were treated to an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime chance to make memories down at Great American Ballpark courtesy of Tide Stain Release and the fantastic and fun Jenny and Emily at Mommin' It Up!

The girls at Mommin' It Up! and Tide teamed up to host a small party for some local SW Ohio bloggers and their families; it was wonderful chance for me and my family to catch up a bit with Andrea at Savings Lifestyle, Amy at Amy in OHio, Shannon at Mommy Bits, and Cortney at Evan Has Landed and their families. My IRL life gets so busy with carting kids around that finding time to get together with my friends who blog is a challenge. It was nice to see their smiling faces again!

The team from Tide Stain Release really went all out for us - we were treated to a fantastic lunch, a visit from Mr. Redlegs, and...drumroll please...a chance to hit some batting practice on the field at Great American Ballpark!

Yes - ya read that right! Batting practice on a major league field - on the REDS field! I'm kinda jittery even typing the words right now - it was THAT overwhelming to stand at home plate and hit a few.

We also received a sample of Tide Stain Release which I plan on putting to good use later today; after a busy weekend that included three ball games for my kiddos (we are a bit baseball/softball fanatic-y around here!) on Saturday, yesterday's once-in-a-lifetime experience at the home of the Reds, and a school sports banquet last night, not only am I totally behind on doing laundry, all of our laundry is sporting a variety of tough stains including dirt, grass, ketchup, chocolate syrup, and something vaguely sticky and unknown (!). Since I've used Tide Stain Release in the past, I know it will knock out all those tough stains and I'm pretty sure it'll put a hurt on the mystery stain, too. ;-)

You can see the video about Tide Stain Release that we watched yesterday (which was short but impressive if you're a mom who faces the dreaded chore of keeping your busy kids clothes clean; I'm all for any product that makes my job as Mom easier) on YouTube here. Be sure to check out the Tide Stain Release Challenge on Facebook as well!

A few fun photos from the day:

My daughter and the divine Miss P posing with Mr. Redlegs (who was just wonderful to all the kids!)

My bunch waiting for their turn at bat.

My hubs getting ready to rip a few - he made that bat SING!

Yours truly, with a BIG case of the shaky nervies as I stepped up to hit. I was glad to get a few!

I wish I had bigger words than just "thank you" for the team from Tide and for Jenny and Emily for the once-in-a-lifetime experience that yesterday turned out to be. We will never forget it and my kiddos are still wide-eyed as they recount every moment. THANK YOU!

And for Knute and I, the day was even more special because we met nineteen (19!!) years ago on May 22, 1992 - what a way to celebrate half a lifetime together!

Thank you SO MUCH!!

*Disclosure: This post is totally uncompensated, unsolicited, and not required as a part of my participation in yesterday's event; I just wanted to give a big shout out to Tide and to the Mommin' It Up! for giving my family the chance to make some killer memories.

Reader Stories | Newbie Couponer Success!

One of the best things about blogging here  - what keeps me blogging here through the busy times and the tough times - is knowing that what I'm doing here really helps people who are new to saving money with coupons.

I recently received this email from Samantha who is totally new to the wonderful world of saving BIG with coupons:

I have been watching Extreme Couponing on TLC and am absolutely excited to start learning how they do it. I have been learning and researching now for about three days. I have been positively thrilled waiting for my chance to just get one thing FREE!

I ran across your site today at about 8:45 am and printed out some of the coupons to use in the 10 item Mega Sale at Kroger. By 11:30 am I walked out with $103.99 worth of pasta (44 boxes), cereal (4 boxes) and chips (2 bags) ABSOLUTELY FREE! :)

I was so nervous at the cash register that I was shaking, I was so afraid that it wouldn't work and I would be so embarrassed I would have to buy pasta that I never would have bought if it wasn't FREE. But we stood there and watched the price drop and drop until is said, "-$0.50". Words can't describe it!

Now I have really started my stockpile!! My sister-in-law was with my husband and me and she is now addicted too!

With the $0.50 credit at the end and I had to grab a bag of M&M's to use it up. So I spent $0.29!

I so wanted to share this with you because it was so exhilarating I was exhausted (easy to do being over 5 months pregnant with my third baby) by 1:30 after telling so many people! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

I will definitely continue to learn the way to coupon and save, save, save!

Samantha, thanks so much for emailing me to share your success! I'm glad that you were able to find the information you needed here at TNFM!

:: The Simple Dollar talks about The Danger of the Rich Act and how tempting it can be to start living large once you've reached your initial financial goals and find yourself with extra cash. The biggest danger? Forgetting the simple joys in life. Definitely a good read.

:: In the same vein, Frugal Dad has a post up talking about being Debt Free and Happy, but Where to Go from Here? that discusses the fact that even if you slay your debt dragon, you still have financial concerns you'll need to address with new goals.

:: Get Rich Slowly has a post up Ask the Readers: What is My Financial Obligation to My Family? that asks the tough questions that many people face when they have extended family members who are in financial straits but who are also unwilling to change their spending ways. Be sure to read through the comments - there are no easy answers but there are lots of good bits of advice from readers facing this issue.

:: Last, this one made me scratch my head and wonder just how many of my tax dollars financed the Raw Milk Sting in Maryland detailed by The Happy Housewife. {sigh} Who knew?!

Have a wonderful weekend!
