Let's Go Krogering! | Week of June 13, 2011 {$5/5 Cars 2 Mega Event Sale Continues + $1 Goldfish Crackers!}

Wondering what's the deal with my weekly Let's Go Krogering! (LGK!) posts?
 Click here for more information.

My Kroger Trip, Monday, June 20, 2011:

Spent: $74.21
Saved: $47.41 (38%)

This week at Kroger features a repeat of the Cars 2 Mega Event sale: buy 5 participating items, get $5.00 off at checkout.

If you haven't already stocked up on some of the deals in this sale, be sure to grab them before the end of the sale. There are several unadvertised items in this Mega Event, including Kellogg's Fruit Snacks and Keebler Fudge Cookies. For a good list of unadvertised Cars 2 Mega Event items, click here.

I apologize for the blurry photo above. I think I am suffering from a case of Summer Shopperitis, known to affect moms during the summer months when school is out and they're grocery shopping with all their kids in tow. Common symptoms include: a tendency to take deep breaths over and over again in an attempt to seek inner reserves of patience; repeating the same phrase over and over and over again (ie: Don't touch it if you're not buying it! or, near the toy aisle or checkout lanes, This is a grocery store, not a basketball gym!); and an overall appearance of weariness (including humidity frazzled hair and smeary mascara).

In all seriousness, my shopping trip with my kiddos wasn't that bad; they really are a good bunch and they always remember to say please, thank you, and excuse me as we traverse our giant Kroger Marketplace. ;-)

I also made a stop at Aldi for the majority of our produce, milk, eggs, and some other pantry essentials. I spent about $32 at Aldi bringing my total for the week to just over $100. I know, I know - ouch! However, after looking back on my grocery spending during the summer of 2010, I realized that I spent closer to $100/week during last summer as well. Part of it is due to the fact that my kiddos are home all day and are more physically active all summer and part of it is due to the abundance of fresh season fruit and veggies (which we eat a LOT of!).

I'm going to allow myself the extra in our grocery budget through the summer because the need is there right now and I am doing a bit more stockpiling than I have in the past. I'm also hopeful that we'll see some bigger Mega Events at Kroger (with a greater variety of participating items) as we move into July and August.

Here's the deals I grabbed at Kroger this week:

Let's Go Krogering! | Week of June 13, 2011 {$5/5 Cars 2 Mega Event Sale + Heinz Ketchup Deal!}

Wondering what's the deal with my weekly Let's Go Krogering! (LGK!) posts?
 Click here for more information.

My Kroger Trip, Monday, June 13, 2011:

Spent: $79.17
Saved: $72.46 (48%)

I was excited to see that Kroger was featuring an awesome Mega Event sale this week: buy 5 participating items, get $5.00 off at checkout.

Getting a $1.00 each participating item is a HUGE savings in and of itself; adding matching coupons to lower the total cost of those participating items just sweetens the deal! ;-)

Since our cereal stockpile is empty (I just opened our last big yellow box of Cheerios at the end of last week), seeing some of our fave Kellogg's cereals in this Mega Event sale was good news.  I stocked up on a bunch of those and will likely go back for a few more boxes of Mini Wheats this weekend since that is the one cereal everyone in my house just.plain.loves.

There is also a HOT deal on Heinz ketchup this week.  The 40 oz bottles are on sale for $1.99 ea (that's a deal in and of itself since the unit price is $0.05/oz).  I saw the $0.50/1 Heinz coupons listed at my favorite coupon clipping service a few weeks ago and ordered a bunch; in my experience, this time of year is one of the few times (if not the only time) that such a high value coupon for Heinz ketchup is released.  Since ketchup is the most used condiment in my house (three kids = lots of ketchup!), I took advantage of the opportunity to use the coupons on this week's sale price and stockpile it.

Now the only question is how long will all that ketchup last??  Knowing my kids, not as long as I'd like to think it will!!

Here's the deals I grabbed at Kroger this week:

Coffee & Clicks | June 11, 2011 {Edition #20: Just FUNNY!}

Welcome to Coffee & Clicks, my weekly roundup of posts from my Google Reader and beyond that caught my eye, that made me think, and that just made me laugh.

Coffee & Clicks is my way of sharing those interesting posts with you.  If you find yourself with a few minutes of leisure to surf on the weekends while you sip your coffee (or whatever fills your mug), feel free to wander through this list of posts and spend some time reading, reflecting, and relaxing.

++++++++++++++++++++

Only one link to share this week; I've been so busy with base-soft-t-ball games and juggling a houseful of already-kinda-bored-with-summer kids (at least, I assume they are hitting the summer boredom doldrums since they've all begun the annual contest of Who Can Pester Who the Most) that I didn't have much time to blog hop this week.

However. I did laugh my way to the end of You Don't Know How Crazy You Are Until You Get a Personal Shopper over at Conversion Diary earlier this week. SO funny, especially if you're a picky shopper, too.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Let's Go Krogering! | Week of June 6, 2011 {A Most Ho-Hum Sale Week + Extreme Couponing Fallout}

Wondering what's the deal with my weekly Let's Go Krogering! (LGK!) posts?
 Click here for more information.

After looking at the weekly deal matchups, I knew I would do far better saving money at Meijer's buy 10 for $10, get the 11th item FREE sale (you can see what I bought and the coupons I used at Meijer right here) than at Kroger this week.

Still, despite the ho-hum sale week at Kroger, there were a few things I wanted to grab.  After taking my kiddos out for a quick breakfast at the donut shop (our usual Monday thing since my older son has a 7-8 am appt every Monday), I headed to Kroger at about 8:30 am with my tribe.

All was quiet at my Kroger and I found all the deals except one very notable deal: the Bic Razors, men and women's disposables (on sale for $3.99 ea) were WIPED OUT.  Every single one was GONE (probably about 6 racks worth of them) at 8:30 in the morning on the first day of the sale.

With the $3/1 coupons that are out for those, they are a hot deal for $0.99 after the coupon so I did expect they would go quickly; however, this.was.ridiculous.

It's frustrating to see first hand in my own small town the trickle down effects of the Extreme Couponing phenomenon as shown by TLC; in my almost four years as an everyday couponer (while I have a simple stockpile, I don't have a small general store in my home), I've not seen shelves wiped out so early on in a sale week like I have in the past six months since TLC began airing their show.

My concern is that the actions of a few will affect the majority and that stores that have generous coupon policies (like my beloved Kroger) will soon start changing those policies (as Kroger did in Houston area stores earlier this spring) as a hedge against those who coupon in an extreme manner and therefore deplete the stores stock and affect the stores profit margin.

IF you have (30)+ coupons for a hot sale item and you wish to use them, please remember that it is always ok to approach the store manager and ask if they will arrange a special order specifically for you.  You'll still get the deal and the store manager will likely appreciate your effort.

Worth the Trip | Meijer 10/$10, 11th Item FREE Sale 6/5-6/11 {Saved 65%}

My Meijer Trip 6/5/11:
Spent: $24.74

Saved: $46.54 (65%)
(Not pictured: (2) Green Giant Veg Boxes, (2) Nestle Crunch Bars,
(2) Smuckers Jam)

I don't often shop at Meijer because I don't have one here in my town. Shopping at Meijer means I either have to make a trip up to Middletown or down to Fields Ertel (where there is traffic GALORE!} and I'll spend valuable time and use up more gas in my van getting there and back.

However, every once in a while - say every two months or so - Meijer runs a great sale during a week when Kroger is running a ho-hum sale. When that happens, I find the time to make a quick trip to Meijer for the best of the deals.

This is one of those weeks!

Meijer is running a buy 10 for $10, get the 11th item FREE sale this week and not only are there lots of coupon matchups for the items in the sale, there are LOTS of fresh produce items included in the sale as well. When I saw that Meijer had 1 lb strawberries for $1.00 included in the sale, I was SOLD! Fresh strawberries are a food group unto themselves for my kiddos during this time of year. ;-)

Here are the deals I grabbed yesterday; I also ordered some coupons from my favorite clipping service so I can make a return trip before the sale ends Saturday night (6/11).

Pasta Roni, $1.00 ea

If you're planning a trip to a Cincinnati area Meijer near you, remember:

:: Meijer doubles coupons to a maximum *doubled* value of $1.00 (coupons valued $0.50-$0.99 all double to $1.00)

:: Meijer allows you to stack Meijer Mealbox store coupons with Manufacturer coupons

:: Meijer will only double (2) identical coupons per (2) identical products per transaction. Any additional identical coupons in your transaction will be redeemed at face value. For planning purposes, if you have more than (2) identical coupons per identical products, you will need to plan to make additional transactions in order to have all of your coupons double.

Menu Plan Monday | Summer Slacker Edition

I plan my family's dinners in five week blocks to maximize my savings at the grocery store and minimize my stress at dinner time. You can read more about my strategy here in my Q&A post here.

I also answered several more questions about how I plan my big ol' menus and how I stockpile shop the weekly sales with coupons; my goal is to get the best deals on items for my monthly menu plan for the lowest cost.  For more Q&A (because you're just dying to know, right?), click here.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Summer break started early for my tribe this year; my kiddo's school year finished on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend.

While I am an admitted monthly menu-planning nut during the school year, I do tend to slack off in the summer especially in June. With three kiddos playing tball, baseball, and softball (and a husband who coaches), most of our nights are spent at one game or another.

One thing we do regularly during the summer is grill out, usually on Saturday or Sunday night. I marinate a TON of chicken, thaw out a couple packs of hot dogs and brats, and throw together a half dozen or so hamburger patties. All of it gets grilled up that night, only some of it gets eaten.

The rest?

Glorious grilled leftover dinners!

If I think ahead or if I find a good deal on fresh veggies, I'll throw some marinated veggie kabobs on the grill, too. I'll soak corn on the cob in the husk in icy cold water for an hour or so and that gets grilled as well; the water in the husk steams the corn - very YUM!

For sides, we stick with garden salad, fresh fruit, and light pasta salads.

I still end up cooking in the kitchen a few nights a week but I do my best to double up meals (cook two dinners at once) because the LAST place I want to be on a hot and humid summer late afternoon is standing near a hot oven or stove top.  ;-)

Since I am a menu planning slacker during the summer, I tend to plan more week-to-week with an eye toward any deals I can find in store on meats and veggies for the grill. I'll stockpile those when I find a great sale or manager special markdown.

Here's a peek at what we're having this week:

Monday

Leftover grilled meats from Saturday
Pasta Salad (nothing fancy - a box mix)
Garden Salad
Fruit

Tuesday

Tacos & Chicken Enchiladas
(My kids still like having their Taco Night Tuesday in the summer!)

Wednesday

Breakfast for dinner - pancakes, turkey bacon, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit

Thursday

Homemade pizza
Carrot & celery sticks

Friday

Free night!

Saturday

Grilled Chicken over salad
Black Bean & Corn Salsa
Rice (mix)

Sunday

Grill out!

Coffee & Clicks | June 4, 2011 {Edition #19: Thinking Long Term, iPhone Apps, and Foreclosure Fallout}

++++++++++++++++++++

:: I liked this view of Taking the Long Road over at The Simple Dollar and agree wholeheartedly; when you invest your time in long term goals for your life (rather than short term fun stuff), your overall sense of contentment grows.

:: Who hasn't fallen prey to the budget pitfalls that happen when you start Sweet Talking Yourself as Frugal Hacks so well describes. Marketing to impulse shoppers is based on exactly this idea of self-entitlement.

:: I'm bookmarking this monster list of Iphone Applications for Saving {and Life!} over at Savings Lifestyle so I can update my apps. I've had my iPhone for about 18 months and while I love it, I definitely don't maximize it's utility as a time & money saving tool as much as I should. I'm always happy to find lists of useful apps from friends who are just as busy juggling the mom-life-blogger-couponista thing as I am.
;-)

:: This last one is courtesy of my hubs; he and I have watched a number of homes (we're talking double digits) of homes on our street (just one street, not the entire neighborhood - that number would be even higher) go into foreclosure as people walk off on their loans. Zillow Blog details The Consequences of Walking Away - interesting reading.

Have a wonderful weekend!
